What is unemployment insurance? Is it paid by employer or employee? How will they get it return?

unemployment
vinay k asked:

how are the employees or employer paid back when unemployment insurance tax is paid by them. Suppose, if there is no employment due to some reasons, then they will be getting help from the insurance agency or company to whom they have paid. But how will they get paid? Will they be given funds? or anything else.

  1. Each state has a state employment (unemployment) office. If you fine yourself unemployed and you meet certain requirements you are entitled to receive an unemployment check. Each state have different guidelines on how much you will receive and the length of time you will be able to receive it (although I think in most cases it is 6 months) GOOD LUCK

  2. Employers and employees are required to pay into an unemployment insurance fund. Payment is based on wages received during each quarter of the previous year with a minimum of two quarters active employment. Most states allow 6 months of payable insurance. Some offer a 13 week extension.

  3. Unemployment Tax is paid by the employer. The tax is funded by federal and state payroll taxes and is placed in an Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund.

Every state has guidelines as to who will qualify to receive unemployment. If believe you qualify, can apply for unemployment at your local unemployment office. You might be able to file online.

  4. Unemployment ” insurance ” is really a tax on employers from the state your business operates in as well as the Federal Government. Your SUI ( state unemployment insurance ) depends on your past claims factored aganist your taxes. In most states sui is paid solely by the employer and has a ceiling for each employee. For instance, in Ohio only the first $9000 paid is subject to the insurance rate. Likewise, FUI ( federal unemployment insurance ) is capped at the first $8,000 paid to the employee.

In general , the first 26 weeks are paid by the state pool and the 13 week extension is from the federal pool.

Money is never refunded to the employer, however the rate of tax is decreased if there are no claims.
